The holiday season brings a sense of celebration, generosity, and the joy of unwrapping something special. In the design industry, it’s a time for studios and agencies to wield their craft to design thoughtful, bespoke gifts for clients and collaborators—expressions of creativity that go beyond the ordinary. It’s inspiring to see how design teams turn this tradition into an art form blending storytelling, craftsmanship, and surprise. At the turn of the new year, we tend to set things aside and look ahead.

While our minds may be on the year ahead of us, I wanted to take some time out to spotlight my favorite studio-made gifts from 2024 that truly stand out.

Tavern’s House Lambrusco

To celebrate their second year in business, Tavern created a limited edition sparkling red Lambrusco, Tavern House Wine, for clients and close agency friends. This follows their first-anniversary project, Tavern Beer, a design created to showcase the team’s capabilities and attract beer clients. Their wine takes inspiration from dive bars, Italian American social clubs, and red sauce joints, a nod to the studio’s love for food, drinks, and hospitality. “Since the beginning, taverns have shaped our agency’s identity,” said Mike Perry, founder and chief creative officer. “Drawing influence from the White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island, the oldest running tavern in the U.S. For this project, we imagined the kind of house wine an old-school Italian American establishment would serve, blending history with our signature creative approach.”

The Century Schoolbook wordmark—a timeless nod —pairs with Minuet, a vintage wine label typeface, and Grilli Type Standard comes in for contrast. Hidden details include vintage seals and stamp overlays that evoke some of the team’s favorite beer labels. The label’s horses resemble chess knights to symbolize Tavern’s two years in business, and repeat in the wax-dipped top, hand-stamped, horse insignia. The Tavern team has created a story and experience that extends well beyond the bottle. The patinaed brass glorifier, which doubles as an ashtray, and a membership card to the studio’s imaginary tavern are theatrical and playful nods to a bygone era. Perry said, “Ultimately, this project is as much about celebrating our clients as it is about indulging our own passion for design, storytelling, and handcrafted details.”

If Only Creative’s Bespoke Salsa

If Only Creative, a Chicana-led creative agency, has always championed collaboration and community at its core. This ethos came to life in their recent partnership with celebrated Chicano chef Jacob Croom of pop-up and supper club My Friend Fernando to develop two custom salsas for existing and potential clients. From the recipe itself to the packaging, this collaboration reflects their shared passion for uplifting culture, storytelling, and artistry. By blending Jacob’s culinary expertise with If Only Creative’s design vision, they’ve created a product that is as authentic and bold as the communities they serve.

“This partnership also marks an exciting moment for the agency,” said If Only Creative’s founder, Marisa Dunning-Sanchez, “as Jacob Croom will officially join If Only Creative as a food partner for our private dinner, El Otro Lado, in 2025.” This announcement underscores the agency’s commitment to bridging creative and culinary worlds, forging relationships that amplify voices within communities of color. Together, they aim to push boundaries, bringing new ideas and flavors to life while celebrating the rich heritage of Chicano culture.

As an agency rooted in food and beverage, If Only Creative consistently prioritizes supporting POC-owned businesses. This collaboration is more than just a product launch—it’s a celebration of heritage, innovation, and the power of collaboration.

Wedge’s Staff Meal Recipes

Speaking of food, pull up a seat to STAFF MEAL: 12 Recipes from the creative directors, designers, and team at Wedge. Born out of a shared love for cooking, gathering, and all things food that comes from the best of hospitality, each recipe comes with a personal anecdote. “From Justin’s Tartare de Boeuf to Alon’s Korean Stew to Cap’s Cookies, there’s something sweet and savory for everyone,” said Sarah Di Domenico, Wedge’s co-founder and chief creative officer.

Bon Appétit!

Stout’s Holiday Cards

Every year, Stout creates a special set of holiday cards for clients and friends of the studio—a cherished tradition that brings delight and creative expression. Each edition takes on a fresh approach, shaped by intentional constraints such as dimensions and a defined color palette.

Over the years, Stout’s designs have ranged from intricate illustrations to bold, experimental concepts. This year, however, the studio embraced a different philosophy: simplicity and elegance. “Inspired by the timeless themes of Peace, Love, and Joy, the 2024 holiday cards embody a refined minimalism, allowing the message to take center stage,” said designer Brigitte La.

CENTER’s Circle C Blanket

Each year, the CENTER team creates a special item of custom merch as a gift for clients and collaborators. “Though we’ve had plenty of requests to sell these items,” said Alex Center, founder and chief creative officer, “we prefer to keep them exclusive—reserved for our close-knit “friends and family.”

For this annual winter tradition, the team has designed everything from sweatshirts and beanies to water bottles and t-shirts. For 2024, instead of something to wear, they created something to snuggle with and keep you warm during the winter chill.

The 2024 CENTER Blanket is a bold design in orange, blue, black, and taupe, featuring a clever twist on the studio’s Circle C logo. It’s not your average branded merch though. Up close, it’s an abstract pattern, worthy of a permanent spot on your couch or favorite chair.

The color palette is a nod to the studio’s signature couch and tables. The blankets are modeled and photographed by the team—the familiar faces that bring the studio to life show us exactly how to rock the blanket with style.

High Tide’s Palmy Candle

The inspiration behind High Tide‘s annual gift was to create an object that paid homage to our longstanding brand symbol and mascot (whom we affectionately refer to as Palmy). “High Tide recently celebrated its 15-year anniversary,” says Danny Miller, founder and creative director. “So it felt right to commemorate the moment with a physical manifestation of our brand symbol that people could enjoy as a candle or simply put up on their bookshelves.”

With a minimal and straightforward studio identity, Palmy was born out of the team’s desire to represent the more fun, laid-back side of High Tide. The anthropomorphic palm also speaks to the studio’s origin story: Miller was on a surf trip in Costa Rica during the studio’s inception, and the name materialized in between long days of surfing.

Transport’s Brass Oil Lamps

Merry and bright? It takes a village.

Partnering with industrial designer Joe Doucet, Transport New York designed brass paraffin oil lamps to embody warm wishes for bright holidays. What is less obvious is the time and effort it took to make their idea a reality, something they started in 2023. Development, prototyping, and applying the team’s signature attention to detail took, well, a bit longer.

But it was worth it. The team always thinks big, and the gift invites the recipient to think big about what they can do together.

Vintage Danish inspiration was only one point in the team’s collaborative effort, down to the group packing and shipping party. “For us, it was a project in bringing Transport’s esprit de corps to life,” said Andy Gray, Transport’s founder and creative director. “It’s a sentiment we were sure to share in our message to recipients.”

Clever Creative’s Signature Scent

As Clever Creative approaches its 20th anniversary, the team wanted the studio’s recent brand refresh to culminate in a meaningful, sensory-driven experience. This special mailer serves as the final touchpoint of that journey—a way to reflect on the studio’s roots while looking ahead to the future.

What better way to celebrate than by creating a signature scent? “With Bonfire, we sought to deepen our brand’s connection by engaging all five senses crafting an experience that lingers long after the first impression,” said Shannon Gabor, founder. More than just a fragrance, Bonfire embodies the warmth, creativity, and spirit that have defined Clever Creative for two decades—a truly memorable and immersive way to share their story with clients and collaborators.

ThoughtMatter

Persistence: More than a drink, it’s our stance: creativity over complacency.

Thought Matter

Crafted as a provocative toast to resilience, ThoughtMatter created zero-proof kombucha to be a reminder that while power can falter, the potential to rebuild with thought and purpose, never does.

Timed for delivery intentionally between Inauguration Day and Presidents’ Day, Thought Matter sent a message about what’s at stake for progress: a possibility only when we dare to break and build with purpose, not perfection. Says the studio, “This year’s gift is a declaration of the strength in our partnerships and the enduring power of creative collaboration,” said Jessie McGuire, managing partner.

Here are all the creative things we're excited to gift this year.

PRINT asked some of the most creative people we know what they are excited to give (and get) this year. Our final installment of gift ideas comes to you from the PRINT team.

(*The gifts on our list are shared as recommendations from our team. However, there is one Bookshop.org affiliate link below. PRINT makes a small percentage off each book purchased for the PRINT Book Club.)

Debbie Millman, editorial director

“Euler’s disk is a stunning physics lesson in a soaring, sparkly spinning top. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever since and seems to defy the laws of physics, but it is, in fact portraying them! See more here, and (above), where I spin one myself for The Marginalia!”

Steven Heller, editor-at-large, The Daily Heller

“I yearn for at least 300 more lineal feet of bookshelves and at least 300 more lineal feet of apartment wall space.

I cannot keep one more book anywhere . . . apt., studio, office, car, etc.”

Amelia Nash, senior staff writer

“This year, I am super excited to gift (and would be equally excited to get) anything from Base Ceramics — a handmade ceramics studio based in Brooklyn, NY. All of their pieces are simply stunning and colourful and quirky, everything I look for in a creative gift.

I came across Base when I was battling the hustle and bustle of craft markets this year and absolutely fell in love with their pieces. The studio’s ethos is ‘an exploration of form, colour, materials, and functionality,’ which I absolutely vibe with. Besides, we can always use more colour in our lives.”

Kim Tidwell, managing editor

“I’m more a writer than a designer these days, my daily color palette vacillating between shades of black and white. But my first love is color.

When I saw this pocket-sized book at one of my favorite bookshops, I scooped it up. At $22, it’s a great gift for the creative people in your life.

Derived from Sanzo Wada’s original 6-volume series, Haishoku Soukan, researched and compiled in the 30s, the compact book contains 348 stunning color combinations.

It may not replace your Pantone chips, but A Dictionary of Color Combinations will be your new favorite for color inspiration.”

Charlotte Beach, senior staff writer

“I have recently come upon the wonderful work of ceramicist Jessica Thompson-Lee. She’s a Brooklyn-based artist who specializes in sculptural, functional, and wearable ceramics, as well as paper art objects.

I am particularly taken by her mugs, which feature funky, organically shaped multicolored designs and eye-catching handles. The shapes of the handles are coral-like, whimsical, and unique— I’m smitten! A great mug is always a crowd-pleasing gift, and these are simply the coolest mugs I’ve ever seen!”

Laura Des Enfants, publisher

“I sat in on a PRINT Book Club and thought Assembling Tomorrow: A Guide to Designing a Thriving Future from the Stanford D.School was the most intriguing book I’d heard about all year. I wanted the book club to last forever because I could listen to the authors, Carissa Carter and Scott Doorley, talk endlessly.

I’m a fiction reader and an art book collector, so I don’t usually buy this type of book, but I might also have to buy one for myself!”

Deb Aldrich, publisher

The Original Bee Revival Kit is a keyring that can be attached to your keychain for when you are on the go and come across an exhausted bee in need of help. We’ve had numerous wild hives take up residence in a beautiful Chinese elm at our house, and I often see bees around our yard that look pooped. Apparently, they can be revived! This keyring provides a reusable bottle of energy-boosting syrup to help rescue an exhausted bee, so it can continue its mission of pollinating planet Earth.

I am obsessed with bees and I love the idea that I can help a tired bee get back to bee-ing.”

The Collected Works

Not only does The Collected Works team have great taste in gifts (see below!), but they have also been the PRINT Awards brand design team for the past three years. The wildly talented TCW team works with us to bring our annual PRINT Awards theme to life each year. For 2025, TCW ran with the concept of biophilia—the innate human tendency to seek connections with nature—a philosophy that resonates throughout the creative community as we consider the interconnectedness of people, nature, and the world around us. Look for a larger profile and brand case study in the new year.

Without further ado … gifts!

“When we sat down to talk about some of the gifts we’re excited about, a pattern started to emerge—things that make us smile, feel a little unexpected, or bring something special to everyday life. It wasn’t about being over the top (well, okay, except for maybe the baguette bag) but about those little moments of joy you get from something that’s just a bit different. Whether it’s something playful for your home, a piece that feels both fun and useful, or something that just adds a spark of personality, these are the kinds of gifts we’d love to give (or get!). We hope you find them as delightful as we do.”

“Two tickets to the New York Transit Museum. To me, the subways and buses are the arteries to the heart that is New York City.

As we wind down the year in type, here’s a sampling of gift ideas for the type lover in your life.

Sista Said: Words of Wisdom from Black Women in Social Justice & the Arts

We love this set of postcards for its serendipitousness. You’ll get a random selection of three hand-pressed works by Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., each offering timeless wisdom from women such as Sojourner Truth to Audre Lorde to Fannie Lou Hamer. No two cards are alike.

Find it at Letterform Archive.

Chicago Architecture Playing Cards

We’re obsessed with everything Christopher Devine at Peacham is doing at the intersection of his twin passions: history and design.

This deck, a collaboration with the Chicago Architecture Center and Wonder City Studio, is like a walking tour of Chicago as the birthplace of modern American architecture. The cards are typeset in Söhne and the playing suits are in Pitch, both by New Zealand-based Klim Type Foundry.

Find the deck at Wonder City Studio.

Devine recently collaborated with Tré Seals and Village Preservation on the Greenwich Village Building Set. He’s also worked with Tobias Frere-Jones and the Historic Districts Council on the Rowhouse Playing Cards, featured here.

The Yearbook of Type No. 7

This hefty volume is all about the numbers: 608 pages.,180 typefaces, 206 type designers from 108 foundries in 29 countries, and one diversion-worthy microsite.

Find it at Slanted.

Riveted in the Word

To call it an e-book feels like an injustice. About a woman’s battle to regain language after a stroke, Riveted is more a moveable feast of letters and words. Lehrer spoke about his collaboration with the book’s subject and about its design at the PRINT Book Club earlier this year. For more, access the recording here.

Find Riveted in the App Store.

More PRINT Book Club gift ideas for type lovers: My First Book of Fancy Letters by Jessica Hische, the 3rd edition of Ellen Lupton’s Thinking With Type, and Citizen Printer, a monograph on the life and career of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.

Mistaken Lyrics Coasters

A personal favorite (my 80s set is well-worn), these coasters are not so much about typography, but rather the love of words. And music. And laughter. Does a better combo exist?

Classic rock to the 90s to the greatest hits. There’s even a mix-tape option.

“Rock the cat spa” at Bright Beam Goods.

System Process Form: Type as Algorithm

This book, by Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir, is described by the publisher as, “The ultimate typographic experiment. 7,762,392 typefaces from one of the world’s foremost typography studios.” Angela Riechers, in her review for PRINT, called it a feast for the eyes and the imagination.

Find the book at Thames & Hudson.

365 Typography Calendar

Designer Kit Hinrichs wants you to look past the words and numbers and appreciate the sculpture and emotion of typography every day of the year.

Find it at Studio Hinrichs.

Surabhi Rathi

“With all our digital connections, I miss the intimacy of handwritten words – that’s something worth bringing back. Sometimes the simplest gestures carry the most meaning.

So, this year’s gift hopes to rekindle the lost art of connection through a beautiful letter pad and fountain pen.

While charmingly old-school, nothing quite says “I care” like a good old letter.

I found this brand (Minted) and it has all sorts of lovely stuff to write a letter. Like this and this.”

Joe Meersman

“The 55-66-88 [phone stand] from CW&T is visually unique, efficient, and affordable. Non-designers are not familiar with the brand and will find the solution striking. It is a memorable gift for those that you don’t live near, as it signals a desire to keep in touch across distance. The 55-66-88 is simple in geometry yet complex in meaning.

It’s a well-designed approach to a common problem. It shows that good design can disrupt a crowded market of similar offerings/solutions. I backed their Kickstarter and enjoyed reading about their journey and obsession with the manufacturing details.

CW&T sells compelling approaches to fairly pedestrian categories. They have a unique perspective on how humans interact with products and re-contextualize the mundane.”

“I have (not so subtly!) spread the word among family and friends that I am utterly smitten by the Fjorden camera grip. I’ve been using my SLR less and less when I travel due to the sheer bulk of it and the associated lenses and gear—and this gadget basically maxes out your iPhone’s camera capabilities with a slim-profile Magsafe attachment, bringing functionality to the fore while adding a tactile element to it all that is missing from smartphone photography. There’s a two-stage shutter button, a zoom lever, a custom dial for ISO, aperture, etc. … and I’m ready to jettison my mirror-based cameras since I just turned 40 and have discovered back pain. Fjorden!”

“I may be biased, but the Joystick Jazz vinyl albums from iam8bit are great for video game and jazz lovers alike. I hope for illustration lovers, too. There are three to date, with big band interpretations of Mario Bros tunes.

The project is very dear to me. I’ve had the pleasure to create all the art for all three releases and received critical acclaim for that work. I think the package as a whole fits perfectly. The arrangements are ace, and the production quality is top. I am very proud of this and will surely give it to a few friends as a gift.”

Letters are Magic in Jessica Hische’s New Children’s Book https://www.printmag.com/designer-interviews/jessica-hische-my-first-book-of-fancy-letters/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 13:58:36 +0000 https://www.printmag.com/?p=779615 Letters are magic. Especially if they're fancy and drawn by Jessica Hische. The lettering artist and graphic designer's fifth book, "My First Book of Fancy Letters," drops on October 22.

The post Letters are Magic in Jessica Hische’s New Children’s Book appeared first on PRINT Magazine.

]]>
Letters are magic. Especially if they’re fancy and drawn by Jessica Hische.

“Letters are magic” is the watchword of Jessica Hische, one of the world’s leading lettering artists. “Letters are an amazing playground,” she says, “a playground for art and creativity. They’re an art form that gets kids — and everyone — believing they’re artists.” But it’s inaccurate to call Hische “just” a lettering artist. She’s a bestselling author, a graphic designer with an enviable client list, and an illustrator with a delightfully sophisticated style.

She’s also the mother of three school-age children, which gives her an insider advantage when it comes to creating books that kids will love and parents will want to buy (and read aloud and collect and display). It’s no accident that her books‚ which are one hundred percent Hische productions from the cover and spine to the acknowledgments page — have sold up to 200,000 copies each.

On October 22 — that’s next Tuesday — her fifth picture book, My First Book of Fancy Letters, will be released by Penguin Random House, and Hische is currently on tour.

What places does she most enjoy visiting? Elementary schools, of course, like the two pictured above, where she’s introducing her 2021 New York Times bestseller Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave. “Kids at first don’t know what a lettering artist is,” she explains. (For a detailed explanation yourself, please see her 2015 book In Progress: Inside a Lettering Artist’s Process from Pencil to Vector.)

To break the ice at a school visit, Hische might ask, “Who has letters on their shirt?” Many kids always raise their hands, so she explains, “An artist drew those letters and made them into what they wanted to express.”

She then demonstrates that letters can have all kinds of forms and meanings. As long as the basic shape of the alphabet letter is clear, it can be Athletic, Bubbly, Creepy … or whatever you, the artist, want it to be. I personally appreciate that each letter is shown as a grown-up capital and a baby lowercase because 95 percent of the letters we read in text are lowercase. Kids who start first grade only knowing the uppercase letters are at a big disadvantage.

Hische might then ask, “What’s your favorite thing?” If a student says, “a rainbow,” she might encourage them to draw an ‘R’ made from a rainbow, like the one in the spread below. If another student answers, “A rocket ship,” you can already visualize the kind of ‘R’ the child will draw. This game has only one rule: you must draw the alphabet letter that matches the concept or word. So, if the word is “Prickly,” like in My First Book of Fancy Letters, in which each letter illustrates an adjective, the ‘P’ is a prickly green cactus.” The ‘F’ is definitely Flowery. And the ‘Y’ is as Yummy as a cookie with pink icing and sprinkles.

Spreads PQR and XYZ from My First Book of Fancy Letters, © Jessica Hische, 2024

“I’m not there to sell books,” Hische says of her school visits. “I’m there to inspire the kids, especially when they’re still at the age when their brains are mushy sponges. Even if the book is not specifically about letters, they’ll walk away inspired to draw letters.” Her way of organizing a talk or pitch — totally involving the audience in a creative process — could be a model for all of us.

A quick stroll through Hische’s website tells you that “lettering artist-author-designer-illustrator-mom” is still an incomplete bio. Hische is a true entrepreneur. In addition to 20 years — and counting — as a design firm principal, creating logos, posters, book jackets, packaging, and all kinds of cool stuff like holiday cookie jars for A-list clients, she owns two retail stores in her adopted hometown of Oakland, California. She describes Drawling as a kids’ art supply store and Jessica Hische &Friends as a showcase for her books and lots of flourish-y things she’s designed: limited-edition prints, posters, apparel, jewelry, and note cards. Many of the products are on the ‘shop’ section of her website, where font packages of her six original typefaces are available for sale and download — so that you, too, can design with very fancy letters.

A few examples from the extensive Jessica Hische portfolio. (l-r) Top row: Spread from the book Tomorrow You’ll Be Brave; Popcorn can from the Neiman Marcus 2022 holiday packaging suite; Poster for all-star Scott Rudin film. Center: Neiman Marcus Christmas cookie jar, based on a ceramic tree that Hische’s grandmother put out every holiday season; Promotion for a master class she teaches for Skillshare featuring her hands refining the Mailchimp logo. Bottom: Poster for the American Red Cross encouraging vaccination; Main title design and poster for Lionsgate film; Poster for Comcast used as set decoration in a film in which E.T. reunites with Elliott’s earth family; Limited-edition print.

Hische is the first to admit that from kindergarten on, she was the one whose art was most often displayed on school bulletin boards. After attending public schools in the small town in Pennsylvania where she grew up, she became “a design major who did illustration on the side” at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, graduating in 2006 with a BFA. In 2007 she came to New York to be a junior designer at Louise Fili LTD, bringing her own historically-based swashes and ligatures to the firm’s work in logo, book, and postage stamp design. Not surprisingly, the job soon became a full-time senior designer position.

“When I’m looking to hire a designer,” Fili says, “I want to see at least one portfolio piece that I wish I’d done. Jessica’s was a set of postcards for the Twelve Days of Christmas, a showcase of her skills. From day one here, she was fearless. To anything I asked of her — Can you make this type look like spaghetti? Like embroidery? Oatmeal? Ribbons? — I received an affirmative response. And the lettering was always, of course, perfect.”

In 2009, Hische began freelancing in New York, making a name for herself and winning just about every award and accolade in the business. In 2011, her husband, the musician and web designer, now Meta design director Russ Maschmeyer, was hired by Facebook, and they moved to the Bay Area.

Hische and Maschmeyer began growing their family in 2015, now with kids aged nine, seven, and five. “I have a complicated life,” she admits, “but I could never miss one of my kids’ first steps or birthday parties. We’ll even make the cake together. Part of the reason I’ve kept my businesses small — mostly just me — is to have a ton of flexibility around family stuff. I love going to their school plays, volunteering at the school, and bringing them to sports. I’m even taking karate with my middle son!”

Letters are an amazing playground.

Jessica Hische

Portrait of the family, © Rasmus Andersson

What are the most important things Jessica Hische wants everyone to know? One: that every letter in her books is hand-drawn, first in pencil, then in Illustrator or Procreate. Other than the glyphs in the font packages, each letter is a unique work of art. Two: that she hopes that the kids (and grown-ups) on your gift list will make their own fancy letters. And have lots of fun doing it.

With Hische, even an interview can be lots of fun.

New routines don’t come easy to working designers. Yet, House Industries and Autotype have carved one out, dropping a new collection of limited edition fine art canvases, serigraphs, housewares, and apparel spotlighting the art of the letterform and paying tribute to a rich archive of typography. Their collaboration brings type enthusiasts refined materialism without compromise.

House Industries, founded by Andy Cruz, has a rich 30-year hand lettering practice that has visualized legendary brands like Hermès, Porsche, Lego, The Eames Office, Heath Ceramics, The New Yorker, and Jimmy Kimmel. Derek Galkin founded Autotype to celebrate designers and give them the freedom to operate outside of their daily craft; past collaborations include designers Pam Shamshiri and Jonathan Ward of Icon. Galkin notes, “It’s our way to express our love of design. Often, creatives get stuck in their means of what their expertise is.”

Andy and I grew up in the world of skateboarding. Our identity as youths in youth culture was defined by what posters we hung on the wall or the t-shirt we wore. Now that we are grown up and immersed in the world of graphic design, how does that evolve and how do we celebrate that today?

Derek Galkin, founder of Autotype

Working as friends for over 20 years, Galkin calls their partnership an “inspiration injection.” The two met pre-social media in the early 2000s, during the House 33 project in London. “Andy and I grew up in the world of skateboarding,” says Galkin, continuing, “Our identity as youths in youth culture was defined by what posters we hung on the wall or the t-shirt we wore. Now that we are grown up and immersed in the world of graphic design, how does that evolve and how do we celebrate that today?”

With a shared love for Los Angeles architecture, Neutra type, and the expansive Photo-Lettering, Inc. archive purchased by House Industries in 2003, the collection features a selection of House’s favorite typographic specimens and graphic inspirations translated into everyday objects, remixing inspiration into new hits.

“We’re fans first,” says Cruz, adding, “If you’re a fan, you don’t want to bum anyone out.”

More than a cool project inspired by cool letterforms, the collaboration comes from the heart and honors a typography archive that is often overlooked in the syllabus of design history. Founded in 1936 by Edward Ronthaler and Harold Horman, Photo-Lettering, Inc. (known as PLINC) was a prolific type foundry once housed at 216 East 45th Street, within what was then New York City’s typesetting district. Today, all 1,500 cubic feet of graphic film reside at House Industries’ Baltimore studio. As Cruz put it, the library charts “The golden era of type as it moved from metal to the film reproduction process.”

Left: Rondthaler, Edward, Life With Letters…as they turned photogenic, Hastings House, 1981. | Right: One Line Manual of Styles visual index, Photo-Lettering, Inc, 1971.

As a major collection of mid-twentieth-century type design, the archive contains film negatives and positives of most of the 10,000 alphabets, decorative motifs, and logos produced in the company’s 55 years by the foremost gifted type designers and lettering artists of the time, including Peter Max, Bob Alonso, Vincent Pacella, Vic Carus and ringleader Ed Benguiat.

Cruz explains, “From WWII up until the Mac, they were the spot to get type from. Once you had your font drawn, they perfected the high-speed turnaround of stepping and repeating these films to set type for designers and creative directors.”

The scrappy process and quick hustle of Photo-Lettering, Inc. embraced commercial lettering artists working in and around Manhattan, including women type designers. The archive continues in this spirit of accessibility as a personal reference for House Industries which has slowly digitized the archive since acquiring it, and also as a source for other type designers and creative directors. Kate Moss tapped the archive for her work with TopShop, sourcing and re-engineering an old Harper’s Bazaar font, as one example.

Making type accessible is one part of the equation for Autotype and House. The other part is enthusiastically telling untold stories of typography’s history, through a lens of personal significance. The Neutraface A to Z eye chart, for instance, showcases the geometric sans serif font collection designed by House, inspired by the work of mid-century master architect, Richard Neutra. The collection of items and objects offers entry to a world of type, hopefully generating more fans. Stirred by a shared love for visual design that began with unvarnished influences in skateboarding culture, the pair have produced a product experience that is a genuine, not-so-scrappy tribute to the art of type.

Autotype and House Industries invite individuals to embrace the art of typography through their collection, available exclusively on Autotype and the Los Angeles location of Heath Ceramics beginning April 11th for one month. Notably, 5% percent of sales will be dedicated to supporting the Letterform Archive, a nonprofit design institution.

‘Long-er Bao’: Singapore’s The Secret Little Agency Celebrates the Year of the Dragon https://www.printmag.com/color-design/the-secret-little-agency-celebrates-year-of-the-dragon-long-bao/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.printmag.com/?p=761442 With Chinese New Year coming on February 10, The Secret Little Agency is commemorating the Year of the Dragon with a contemporary take on a traditional gift.

The Lunar New Year, the Year of the Dragon, is set to dawn on February 10, and to commemorate the occasion, The Secret Little Agency has crafted something unique and exclusive – the ‘Long Bao.’ This tongue-in-cheek take on the traditional red packet, or 紅包 (hóng bāo in Mandarin), pays homage to a centuries-old Chinese New Year tradition that dates back to the Han Dynasty in 202 BC.2 BC.

Traditionally filled with money and given as tokens of good wishes, red packets are integral to Chinese New Year celebrations. The Year of the Dragon holds special significance, symbolizing success, honor, and dignity — believed to bring growth, progress, and abundance.

The Secret Little Agency created the Long Bao to celebrate this auspicious year. A play on words, the name is derived from the pronunciation of the Chinese character for dragon, which is ‘lóng’ or ‘loong.’

This dragon year, we decided to extend the red packet and make it long-er.

The Secret Little Agency

Nodding to a rich tradition, The Long Bao also serves up some humor and a contemporary aesthetic, making the symbol of good fortune a unique gift.

This limited edition creation captures the Chinese New Year’s essence and exemplifies The Secret Little Agency’s commitment to creativity and innovation. Founded in 2009, The Secret Little Agency remains the only creative agency in Singapore to be named both Independent and Creative Agency of the Year multiple times in the last decade.

With only 1000 pieces available in this exclusive run, the agency plans to distribute them to friends and partners in Singapore and worldwide. Intrigued? Request your own Long Bao with an email to The Secret Little Agency.

“As a self-proclaimed colour obsessive, I’ve been eyeing viction:ary’s full colour-palette book series for some time now. I’m hoping to get graced by St. Nic himself with the full collection. At least at some point in the near future I’ll splurge and get all the books myself, I don’t care if my shelves are already overflowing, and I have gifted a few of the books to dear friends of mine already. Always on a mission to spread a little colour!”

“Subscriptions are the gifts that keep on giving, so I’m recommending two of my favorites out there for design lovers. The beloved pencil brand Blackwing offers a subscription for their Volumes (special collections) series, where subscribers receive as 12-pack of each new Volume for a full year, and 10% off all online purchases.

Another subscription I’d be giddy to receive is to BLAG Magazine: Adventures in Sign Painting Craft, Community & Culture. BLAG (Better Letters Magazine) is the world’s only print and online publication dedicated to sign painting, lovingly helmed by founder Sam Roberts.”

Charlotte Beach is an LA-based writer here at PRINT, who focuses on highlighting old-world art forms and creatives keen on keeping handcraft alive. She’s also a sign painter, currently enrolled in the famed Sign Graphics program at Los Angeles Trade Tech College. A proud maximalist, Charlotte harbors an inordinate disdain for the color navy and an affinity for retro aesthetics.

“I would pick the classic Thyko radio from Lexon. A modern update on this classic Marc Berthier design that provides Bluetooth and is offered in no less than 15 colors. The challenge is the curation, as the color telegraphs the experience in a way few products can since the form can be so quiet on its own. Black is a classic Designerd way to go, although you have some understated neutrals such as Taupe, Mastic, Dark Grey, or the aptly titled ‘Ultimate Grey.’ If you prefer a pop of color, there is also a stale paprika hue. Whether you can see a special someone ironically listening to speed-metal in pink, or bringing the ruckus with some Wu-Tang in a very trending saturated yellow, it’s a stellar gift.

Fun facts: it graced the cover of Time Magazine and is part of the MOMA permanent collection. Can your Bluetooth speaker say that?”

Joe Meersman is a Partner at The Collective, a multidisciplinary design firm. He has also been an Adjunct Professor at UT Austin for over five years, teaching Visual Communication, Research, and Prototyping. He considers himself an accidental educator and loves knowing “Texas” is a slang term for “Crazy” in Norway.
